Pioneer Plumbing and Heating provides a wide array of plumbing-related services and one of our most popular requests is for trenchless pipe repairs. Many homeowners understandably have questions about the process and if there are any downsides of opting for trenchless repair over traditional excavation and replacement. Here are a few benefits and disadvantages related to trenchless pipe repairs.
Benefits of Trenchless Repairs
Replacing pipes and sewer lines without excavation is always preferred - after all, nobody likes having a huge section of their lawn, driveways, and streets removed and dirt exposed for a long period of time. By drilling two holes - one for entry and the other exit - specialized equipment pulls a cable through the old pipe and a larger piece smashes the old pipe to bits, allowing us to install a new, higher-quality pipe in its place.
PEX pipes are resistant to corrosion and are extremely durable despite being rather flexible. Seamless pipes cannot be damaged by roots or become blocked as a result of internal clogging - a smooth surface throughout sees to that. Plus, PEX pipes carry a nearly 50-year life expectancy, so you shouldn't have to worry about repairs or replacement anytime soon.
Disadvantages of the Trenchless Repair Method
If trenchless repair is performed improperly, there can be complications for the homeowner. One trenchless repair method, which includes epoxy pipe relining (essentially relining the interior of an old pipe to fix any breaks) sees more complications than a complete replacement. If the epoxy is not allowed to cure for the proper duration, repairs will have to be made once again to clear any blockages or breaks that resulted in the faulty repair job.
Depending on local codes, homeowners may be responsible for the pipes out to and including sections of the street, working beneath which requires excavation of the street and the accompanying permits and permissions that go along with that. However, compared to traditional pipe replacement methods, trenchless repair in city streets requires much less digging and allows traffic to flow freely around the work area in many cases.
